OTTAWA — Canada's getting new cigarette labelling laws, QMI Agency has learned.
After extensive public pressure earlier this month, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq is going to follow through Thursday on a Health Canada promise to update the labels 10 years after they were introduced.(新商盟网xinshangmeng.org)
The department has been working on new warning labels for cigarette packages since 2003. Health organizations argue the old labels are stale and less shocking to smokers, and say the new labels were expected earlier this year. They want to see a national toll-free quit line included as part of an anti-tobacco campaign.
The new labels are expected to be part of a full campaign that includes a heavy social media component. Aglukkaq has spoken frequently about the benefits of using Facebook and Twitter to reach young people who may be considering taking up smoking.
After intense lobbying by anti-smoking groups this fall, and amid accusations from opposition MPs and provincial officials that Aglukkaq was catering to the tobacco industry, she was forced to promise the new labelling rules would be announced soon.
"We're not in bed with Big Tobacco," Aglukkaq said in early December.
"I have been examining the labelling ... and I have not shelved that project."
On Dec. 14, government MPs on the Commons health committee voted in favour of an opposition motion to make the plan public by Jan. 17.
The MPs voted in favour of graphic photo labels, but against a separate opposition motion that pushed for labels covering 75% of the package and on the two biggest sides, inserts inside and a national toll-free quit line.(新商盟网xinshangmeng.org)
Cynthia Callard, spokeswoman for Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada, says many of the anti-smoking groups are invited to Thursday's announcement, which she considers a good sign.
"I'm feeling optimistic," she said.
